FOCUS/REVIEW qUESTION: How do the parties determine their candidates for the national election?

LEARNING TARGETS:

  • What is the purpose and role of party's national convention in the election process?
  • Experience & learn about the U.S. Presidential Election process.
  • Understand the role of fundraising in the U.S. election process.
  • Understand the Electoral College System and how it works to elect our president.

AGENDA:

  • PARTY CONVETION DAY!
  • Political Parties:
    • Determine how much you plan to spend on your convention today for each state.
    • CONVENTION DAY - Give your acceptance speech and earn our vote!
  • Interest Groups/Regions:
    • Score the Parties on their Convention Performance
    • Continue your research on your Interest Group for your Interest Group Poster. See our combined Google Classroom for directions and examples.
    • Once you complete your research and answer 7 of the 11 questions on the Interest Group Planner, you can show them to Mr. P for a cash bonus to spend on parties that promote your interests.
    • After completing your research, begin making your Interest Group Advertisement/Membership Poster - see rubric on Interest Group Planner.

ASSIGNMENTS:

  • Political Parties - Fundraise and work on Press Conference Q & A & VP Debate.
  • Regions/Interest Groups - Work on Interest Group Poster/Ad! Cash bonuses for the best one! - DUE THURSDAY.

  • VICE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE:
    • Vice Presidential candidates field questions from the media (teacher) to show they're ready to take over if something should befall the president.
  • REGIONS/INTERST GROUPS - Rate how the vice-presidential candidates did in their debate on your evaluation forms.

  • PRESS CONFERENCE DAY:
    • Regions & Interest Groups meet with the parties to discuss their views on the issues and determine who they'll give cash/checks to in the future.
  • INTERST GROUPS - Your Interest Group Poster is due TODAY! Turn it to receive your bonus cash to spend on today's Town Hall meetings.
    • Ask questions on your topics/issues of interest to the Parties in Town Hall today.

ASSIGNMENTS:

  • EVERYONE: Read pages 422-449 on Topic 10: Voting and complete the Voting Study Guide found in our Google Classroom.

    • Finish your Poster if you haven't already.

    • Talk to Parties about your issues and try to get them to include your issues in their future events and speeches. If they do, donate to them.
